Banwell (Terror) Bridge
Fort Dodge, IA 50501
The Banwell (Terror) Bridge in Fort Dodge is one of Iowa's most haunted bridges. It has been around since the 1800s and there are tons of eerie tales surrounding it. One of the stories surrounding the bridge include a woman who brought her children there to watch the trains pass below. She threw them over the bridge railings, watching as they were struck and killed by the train. She then jumped in front of the train herself. Rumor has it if you drive onto the bridge and stop your car without locking the doors and windows, the woman's spirit may try to throw you off. Those who are brave enough to get out of their cars have reported seeing strange orbs of light, hearing voices in the woods, or the sound of a woman moaning under the bridge. Some have even reported handprints on their car windows.

We took 2 carloads of people here when I was 18ish. We parked on the bridge and looked over the edge heard a train but didnt see one. Went and walked the tracks and saw orbs the guys were a little ways ahead of us and out of nowhere all of them were running at us full speed and swore something with eyes was chasing them. Hopped in our cars to peel out if there and the truck stalled on the tracks. Heard the train again and the car rolled off of the tracks on its own and started again as we are driving away as fast as we can the headlights on the truck stopped working and the road was quite curvy. Im not sure how we got out of there but when we got to a well lit area there were several different sized sets of tiny handprints.

In college my friends and I would go hang out on the bridge multiple times, and we started walking on the track. Most nights it was fine and quiet, but one night we were with a group of friends and we all heard the sound of a train and saw lights coming toward us. We all ran. Scariest thing ever. Also had handprints on our windows after being on the bridge too. Often heard voices. I don’t believe in things like that but honestly it was the scariest thing I’ve experienced

Myself, my husband, and my teenage daughter went to this bridge tonight. While we were there we heard a train engine idling (no trains were there), heard a faint distant train whistle, saw lights in the woods, saw a shadow move into the woods, and felt we were being watched. After we left the bridge, we pulled over to look at the car. There were small fingerprints on all 4 doors (weren't there before) on the lower part of the doors and fingerprints on the passenger's side window.
