Independence State Mental Health Institute - Real Haunted Place

  • 50644 Iowa Ave.
  • Independence, IA
The Independence State Mental Health Institute, also known as the Independence State Hospital, dates back to 1873. It was built to help relieve the overcrowding at the Mount Pleasant State Hospital. Most of the building is still in use to this day, however, there was an old wing that was transformed into a "Days of Yore" museum that features disturbing artifacts from a time when those suffering from mental illness were treated horrifically. Witnesses have reported hearing whispers at the location, have felt cold drafts, and have had the eerie feeling of being watched. Disembodied screams have also been heard at the property.

back in 2022, i was a resident in the mental facility at the shelter. I always had a feeling there was something there with me. my peers reported seeing a black woman in a white dress outside but only during the thunderstorms. I remember sitting on my bed reading a book. now im on the 3rd floor and the windows are barred. anyway, i look over and all of a sudden there is this translucent blobby type figure just floating across my window. man I freaked out so badly. another time one of my peers went downstairs to the cafeteria to get our dinner. on her way back to the elevator, where she goes through many tunnels. and theres footsteps following her, theres nobody behind her. she finally gets in the elevator after sprinting and the footsteps were running too. the elevator wouldt close. when it finally did and she came back up to the third floor, she BOLTED out of the elevator. this is surely a really haunted place. and i live there for about 6 months. if you want to learn more stories email me at 27brow_t@union.k12.ia.us

I had a friend who resided there back in 2010. They were working on part of a wing, and one of the staff made us use this rickety elevator that didn't seem safe ro begin with, and brought us thru a freaking tunnel under the building. Creepy wnough as it is, as we were walking, we heard footsteps behind us, when we stopped they stopped shortly after us, but not the same time and it sounded like womens heels. Once up in the youth wing, walking past one of the rooms, I saw an old woman in realy old wheelchair. Asked why there was an old lady with the kids, and was told there wasn't one and those rooms were all unoccupied.
