The Decker Hotel in Maquoketa was founded by James Decker in 1875. The historic property features much woodwork and original furniture from Maquoketan artisans as the town is mostly known for its wood-based industry. The hotel became a popular gathering place and local landmark, making its way to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The location has seen its fair share of celebrities and politicians, including musicians like Norah Jones and well-known names from the past such as and John Deere and Ulysses S. Grant. The hotel has had reports of paranormal activity, including hearing or seeing unexplained sounds and sights, but apparently the Paranormal of Wisconsin group investigated the place, and the results came up inconclusive. Check out The Decker Hotel for yourself and let us know if you think it’s really haunted or not!

Reviews

Still crazy after all these years.

My first night at the Decker Hotel, we used to call it the Decker House Inn, was in 1964, when we moved to Maquoketa, during a horrendously wild thunderstorm. I was just a kid and marveled at the scale of the beautiful staircase and presidential suite where we stayed.
I was back there last week, Sept. 2025, and enjoyed a few nights there. It's a quaint place that shows it's age but has been seeing guests since 1875, just a bit after the civil war. It's still a charming place, and if you like old places, this would fit the bill. It's clean and tidy and simple. I loved it.
Re: the Wisconsin paramormal society found it "inconclusive" for finding ghosts....well, seriously, what do you expect; we're talking ghosts! But there are ample wood creaks and groans, voices from other rooms and perhaps ether, floating about the place. Oh, and the worlds slowest three floor elevator!
It's always been there, and proudly stands at the north end of Main street. Long may it shine!
